A Message From Our Principal

Dear Bay Park Families,
Welcome to Bay Park Elementary School. I am Melissa Roy Wood, and it is truly an honor to serve as principal of this remarkable learning community. Bay Park Elementary is a place where students are known, valued, and encouraged to grow academically, socially, and emotionally, and I am proud to partner with our students, staff, families, and community in this important work.
I believe deeply that education is the foundation of a thriving democratic society. At Bay Park Elementary, we are committed to creating a learning environment that is inclusive, reflective, and grounded in high expectations for all students. As a California Distinguished School, we hold a strong tradition of excellence while continually seeking ways to grow, innovate, and better serve our community.
Our school is guided by the belief that every child’s voice matters. We strive to foster a culture where students feel a strong sense of belonging, where families are welcomed as partners, and where learning is engaging, meaningful, and responsive to the diverse experiences our students bring to school each day. Through collaboration, thoughtful instruction, and shared responsibility, we work together to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.
I am a proud product of the San Diego Unified School District, having attended La Jolla Elementary, Muirlands Middle School, and La Jolla High School, and later returning to teach fifth grade at La Jolla Elementary. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with a minor in US History, as well as Master’s degrees in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership from San Diego State University. With over twenty years of experience in San Diego Unified, including years as both a teacher and school leader, I bring a deep commitment to public education and to serving students and families with care and purpose.
I am grateful to work alongside a staff and community whose dedication to equity, belonging, and student voice is evident every day. That shared commitment has been recognized through regional honors that celebrate efforts to create welcoming and inclusive schools where students and families feel seen, supported, and empowered. These acknowledgments reflect the collective work of our entire Bay Park community and our belief that strong relationships and shared leadership are at the heart of meaningful change.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, exploring new places, and supporting my daughter’s interests in softball, art, music, and sports. These experiences continually remind me of the importance of joy, balance, and connection values we strive to cultivate for our students as well.
My door is always open, and I welcome your ideas, questions, and partnership. At Bay Park Elementary, we believe in putting people first and creating a community rooted in care, dignity, and mutual respect because our community is our strength.
